Had to choose between dovetails or pocket screws for a big kitchen job

Last month I got a 12 cabinet kitchen order and had to pick between hand cut dovetails for the drawers or just using pocket screws. Dovetails look way better but take me about 45 minutes per drawer box. Pocket screws take 10 minutes but feel cheap to me. I ended up splitting the difference and did dovetails on the visible drawers and pocket screws on the utility ones. Customer never even asked about it, but it saved me like 6 hours total. Has anyone else done a mix like that and regretted it later?

I picked up one of those little diamond-coated sharpening widgets for my router bits thinking it would be a cheap fix for some dull whiteside bits. Overhang ratio for granite countertops is way lower than most guys think

I was looking at the NKBA guidelines last night and saw they recommend max 1/3 overhang without support. Most guys in my shop have been doing 12 inches on a 24 inch deep cabinet for years and acting like it's fine. That's half the cabinet depth, not a third. Checked with a stone supplier in Nashville and he said he sees cracked tops from this all the time. Anyone else been running bigger overhangs without issues?

Switched from dowels to biscuits after a shop visit

I was dead set on dowel joinery for cabinet face frames for about 5 years. Then I stopped by Anderson Millwork in Portland last month and the old guy there showed me how they use a biscuit joiner for everything. He ran a test joint and I could not pull it apart by hand. I still keep dowels for alignment on panels, but do you guys use biscuits for face frames or stick with pocket holes?

Comparison between pocket hole jigs - Bessey vs Kreg changed my mind

I used a Kreg jig for about 5 years and thought it was the only way to go. Then I borrowed a buddy's Bessey at a job site last month and the difference in clamp pressure was night and day. No slipping on hardwood ply and the alignment stayed dead on for all 12 cabinet boxes. Anyone else try switching brands and find one just works better for your setup?

Trade school vs on-the-job training for cabinetmaking

Had coffee with an old timer last week. He said apprenticeships are dead and trade school is the only way now. Claims schools teach the math and design part better than any shop floor ever could. But I learned everything hanging around a custom shop in Portland. Sanding, finishing, reading blueprints, all hands-on. Took me 3 years to get comfortable with dovetails. What do you all think is better for a newbie today? Has anyone switched from one path to the other later in their career?

A customer told me my drawer slides sounded ‘cheap’ so I switched to soft-close

I built a custom kitchen for a client in Austin last spring. Everything looked great, nice maple cabinets, solid construction. But after they lived with it for a week, the wife called me and said the drawers sounded like a cheap motel door slamming shut. I was using standard side-mount ball bearing slides, nothing wrong with them really. She asked if I could swap in soft-close undermount slides instead. So I went back, pulled all the drawers out, and replaced them with Blumotion slides. Took me about 6 hours total but man, what a difference. The silence was almost eerie at first. Now I only use soft-close on every job unless the customer specifically asks for something else. Has anyone else had a client call out something you thought was fine?

Old cabinet maker told me to stop using sandpaper on MDF edges

I was in a shop outside Nashville last week and this guy in his 70s saw me sanding the edges of some MDF panels. He walked over and told me to just hit them with a quick pass on the table saw instead. Honestly I thought he was full of it but I tried it on a scrap piece. The edges came out way smoother with no fuzz and it saved me like 20 minutes per sheet. Has anyone else tried this trick or do you stick with sanding?

Finally nailed the inset door reveal on my first try yesterday

Had to choose between using a 1/2" or 5/8" overlay hinge and went with the 5/8" after measuring twice. Took a gamble and the gaps came out perfect at 1/8" all around. Anyone else struggle with getting those inset gaps consistent?

Warning: That big hardware store countertop laminate is NOT the same

I needed to re-laminate a kitchen island I built for a customer in Portland last month. Grabbed a sheet from the big orange store because it was convenient and half the price of my usual supplier. Cut it, glued it, pressed it, and three days later the edges started lifting along the backsplash. Called my supplier and he told me their stuff has way less adhesive backing than the pro grade sheets. So now I drive the extra 20 minutes to the proper place every time. Anybody else get burned by that cheap laminate?

Tried a cheap router bit from Harbor Freight on maple, actually shocked at the result

Picked up a $9 flush trim bit just to see if it would last one drawer pull. Cut through 15 feet of hard maple without burning, still sharp enough to use on another project. Has anyone else had decent luck with budget bits or was this just a fluke?

I've been cutting dovetails by hand since I was 18 and always had tiny gaps I'd hide with sawdust and glue. Showerthought: Should we still use MDF in high-humidity kitchens?

I stopped by a job site in Portland last week and saw a guy slapping MDF into a kitchen remodel near a window. I get that it's flat and cheap, but we all know one spill or a humid summer and that stuff swells like a sponge. On the other hand, plywood costs more and can warp or have voids that mess up your finish. So what's the better call for a normal homeowner kitchen that sees steam every day? I've had mixed results with both and wonder if I'm overthinking it. Any of you guys still using MDF in wet areas?
