Old timer told me to use lighter fluid on sticky shutters and I'm still mad I listened
About 8 months ago at a swap meet in Columbus, a retired repair guy swore lighter fluid would free up slow shutter blades on my old Pentax Spotmatic. I tried it on a junk body first and it worked for maybe 2 weeks before the blades got gummy and seized up completely. Now I'm thinking he was messing with me or maybe his method only worked on specific cameras. Has anyone else been given a quick fix that ended up making things worse in the long run?

Man, that stinks. I've been burned by old timer advice too, like the guy who told me to use dish soap on VCR pinch rollers, which wrecked the rubber after a few months. Lighter fluid is pretty harsh, it probably ate away any remaining lubrication or damaged the grease in ways that made it gummy later. Your mileage may vary on that fix, but I think that retired guy might have just been used to a specific type of shutter or old lubricant.
