Spent a whole day chasing a shutter squeak in a Nikon F3
Turns out it was a tiny bit of old lube on the wrong gear, not the curtain bearings. Anyone know a better solvent than lighter fluid for that?

A buddy of mine had a similar hunt with an old Pentax. He tried a few things before settling on a drop of naptha on a toothpick, which did the trick. Walker.logan's idea about pure isopropyl is a solid one too, especially for being less harsh on some plastics. My friend just prefers naptha for how quickly it dries without a trace. It's funny how these tiny gremlins can eat up a whole afternoon.

I’ve had good luck with pure isopropyl alcohol for that.

Works great until you forget and take a swig thinking it's water. That was a rough Tuesday. My throat still gets tight just thinking about it. Definitely learned to label my bottles after that little adventure.
