TIL wasting $80 on a lens cleaning kit that ruined my front element
Bought a fancy lens cleaning kit online for $80. It had a brush with some weird chemical on it that smeared oil everywhere. Anyone else had luck with just a microfiber cloth and distilled water?

Gotta disagree here. A plain microfiber cloth and distilled water have always worked fine for me over years of photography. Maybe that kit just had a bad batch or you got unlucky with the chemical, but spending $80 on lens cleaning is overkill in my experience.

Fair enough. I used to be in the microfiber camp too until I got a stubborn smear on my 70-200 that distilled water couldn't touch, so I gave a proper kit a shot and it actually fixed it.
