A guy at the REI in Austin told me to size up my sleeping pad, and he was wrong

I bought a sleeping pad last spring and the guy helping me at the REI in Austin kept saying to go with the longer wide version even though I am 5'8". He said I would regret the regular size once I slept on it a few nights. I took his word and got the wide one, then used it on 6 trips over the summer. The extra width made it slide around in my 2 person tent and I kept waking up with my feet hanging off the end anyway. I finally swapped to a regular pad last week and it fits my tent and my body way better. Has anyone else been talked into a bigger pad and regretted it?
