My nephew called out my cheap sleeping pad last summer

He told me I was waking up cranky every morning and it was because my old foam pad was shot. Switched to a $60 insulated inflatable and actually slept through the night on a trip to the Smokies last month. Anyone else have a family member point out gear that was past its prime?

Oh man, that's great! My sister did the same thing to me last year when I dragged out my old thermarest from 2005 for a trip to the Smokies actually. She flat out told me I looked like a grumpy bear every morning because I was rolling off that thing all night. I finally got a decent Klymit pad for around $50 and it changed everything, I actually woke up feeling human for once. Did your nephew recommend that specific brand or was it just a general push to upgrade?

Oh, I don't know, I still think there's something to be said for the old ways. I've had my Thermarest for close to fifteen years now, and it's still doing the job. Sure, I might toss and turn a little more, but I actually think that discomfort keeps me from sleeping too deeply and getting stiff. I went out to the Alleghenies last fall with a friend who had a brand new Klymit pad and he spent half the night adjusting the inflation. Meanwhile, I just rolled out my old mat, let it self-inflate a bit, and was fine. Sometimes the newest thing isn't the answer, you know?
