My uncle insisted a cheap $20 sleeping bag was fine for summer in the Rockies, but I woke up shivering at 2 AM.

He said 'you won't need the fancy stuff,' but that cold snap proved him wrong, so what's a good budget bag that actually holds up in variable mountain temps?

Oh man, that's the worst feeling, shivering in the middle of the night with no way to get warm. Your uncle meant well, but mountain weather just doesn't play by the rules. For a decent budget bag that handles surprises, look at the Teton Sports Trailhead. It's not fancy, but it's rated for actual temps and has kept me comfy down into the 40s.

Yeah, "mountain weather just doesn't play by the rules" is putting it lightly, @webb.derek, unlike my cheap bag that played dead.
