That old timer at REI who sold me the wrong sleeping pad
I was at the REI in Boulder last spring, just looking at sleeping pads, and this guy maybe 70 years old comes up and says 'son, you need the inflatable one, the foam ones are for people who camp in their driveway.' I bought the inflatable. First night out near Estes Park it sprung a leak at 2 AM and I woke up on frozen dirt. Anyone else get bad advice from someone who seemed like they knew everything?

That old REI guy gave me the same bad pitch and my pad went flat on the first rainy night in Rocky Mountain Park.

oh man, i had a friend who went through this exact thing. he bought a fancy pad from some know-it-all at the store and it was useless by the second night in the sierras. he ended up sleeping on a pile of pine needles and regretted not just getting a simple foam pad.
