Helped a new rider figure out gear for our winters

Saw someone at a gas station having trouble with their helmet in the frosty air. Gave them a tip on balaclavas, and we ended up chatting about best ways to layer up. What's your go-to method for staying warm on the bike?

Layering up too much just makes you sweat and then freeze later. All that extra clothing traps moisture against your skin when you're moving. You're better off with a windproof shell and trusting your body to adapt to the cold.

Tell that to anyone who's tried skiing in just a shell, @hugo_grant. Good layers move sweat away from your skin, they don't trap it. A solid base layer keeps you dry, a mid layer keeps you warm, and the shell blocks wind. Without that insulation, you're just a damp person in a windbreaker, and your body can't adapt to that.
