Ran into a guy at the Trailhead parking lot near Golden who saved my day
I was about 20km into a ride near Golden BC last summer when my rear derailleur completely seized up. This older guy named Dave pulled over in his truck, saw me fiddling with it, and handed me a chain tool and a pair of pliers. He stood there for 15 minutes showing me how to turn the bike into a singlespeed just to get back to the lot. Has anyone else had a random stranger bail them out on a ride?

Not to be THAT guy but is this really a story worth telling years later? Guy handed you some tools and stood around for 15 minutes. That's like barely a favor in the grand scheme of things. Maybe I'm just jaded but I've had strangers do way more for me on the trail like giving me a literal ride home 30 miles away. Fifteen minutes of instruction is pretty low effort. I get that it was nice but people act like someone saved their life when really it was just a minor inconvenience.

It is kind of funny how people measure favors by time or distance though... @averym82, you got a ride 30 miles which is awesome, but that guy had to have a car and be going your way anyway. This trail mechanic guy was probably cold and tired too, and he stopped what he was doing to help someone he didn't know with something that could've left them stuck out there overnight. The difference is not the effort, it's the impact in the moment. A little help at the right time can feel just as big as a big help later on.
