I finally figured out why my signal readings were off in that old building downtown

Last week I was working on a job in a pre-war building on Main Street, and my meter kept showing weird spikes and drops. After three hours of checking connections, I realized the whole internal phone wiring from the 70s was still live and causing interference. I disconnected the old lines at the main panel and my readings went clean. Has anyone else run into ghost signals from ancient wiring like that?

Heard a guy at the diner break down the 'flat earth' thing in a way that actually made sense

I was grabbing a coffee at Lou's Diner in Akron and overheard two guys at the next booth. One was going on about how the horizon always rises to eye level, which he said you can test yourself. He pulled out his phone and showed a video of a simple experiment with a level on a lake. It wasn't about secret societies or NASA lies, just a basic observation anyone could check. I always wrote that whole idea off as crazy, but hearing it put that plainly, as a physical thing to look at, got me thinking about how we dismiss stuff without looking. Has anyone else actually tried one of those basic horizon checks?

Showerthought: A guy in Denver offered me a vintage toaster as payment for fixing his fridge.

I was finishing up a job on a 1990s side-by-side when he brought out this chrome Sunbeam from the 50s, saying it was a 'family heirloom' and worth more than my service call. I took the toaster, it works perfectly, and now I make my breakfast with a piece of appliance history. Has anyone else gotten a truly weird trade instead of cash?

Warning: I keep seeing people ride the shoulder on Highway 7 near Peterborough

I mean, I get it, the road gets narrow and the gravel can be bad, but it's super dangerous and actually illegal. I was driving out there last Tuesday and saw three different riders doing it within a 20 minute stretch. It's not a bike lane, and cars aren't expecting you to be there, especially around blind corners. Has anyone else noticed this becoming a common thing on certain routes?

Talking to a fire inspector changed how I look at machine room doors

I was working on a traction job in an old office building last week. The fire inspector came by and pointed at the machine room door. He said, 'That latch is wrong. In a real fire, that door needs to stay closed on its own.' I always just made sure the door closed, but I never thought about the latch type. Has anyone else had an inspector call out a specific door part like that?

TIL the cliff face at Miller's Point eroded a whole foot back in just two years from that new storm drain runoff.

Watched the survey markers from 2022 get exposed and fall off this month, which really shows how fast water can chew through sandstone when you change its path.

That one time a client's check bounced at the Denver coffee shop

I was meeting a new client at a spot on Colfax Avenue to go over a landscaping plan, and they paid me with a check for the deposit. Two days later, my bank called to say it bounced. I had already bought $500 worth of plants and materials. Now I make all new clients pay half upfront through a direct bank transfer or a card before I even order supplies. Has anyone else had to switch their whole payment system after one bad check?

I was reading an old blog post from Ryder Carroll and he said the original bullet journal only had four collections

I mean, I've been adding trackers and weekly spreads and mood charts for ages, thinking that was the whole point. Finding out the guy who made it basically just used an index, a future log, a monthly log, and a daily log kind of blew my mind. It was on his personal site from like 2013. Has anyone else tried going back to just the core four and did it actually work better?

I was stripping wire wrong for a decade until a guy in Tacoma called me out

I always used my lineman's pliers to strip 12/2 Romex, pinching and pulling the sheathing off. Last week, an old timer on a job site in Tacoma saw me do it and said, 'You're crushing the ground wire doing that.' He showed me how to use the cable ripper built into my strippers, just a quick slice and pull. I tried it and the ground wire stayed perfectly round. I've probably been weakening grounds in hundreds of houses without knowing. Anyone else have a basic tool trick they missed for way too long?
