Rant: Got roasted by a shop in Vancouver for my chain tension.

I took my bike into Dream Cycle on Main Street for a tune up last month. The mechanic handed it back and said my chain was so loose it looked like a skipping rope. He told me to ditch the 1 inch slack rule and go for just a quarter inch of play. Now my shifts don't clunk and I lost that annoying slap sound. Has anyone else been running way too much slack for years?

Yeah I ran 1 inch of slack for years until a buddy looked at it and laughed. Tightened it up way more and my drivetrain stopped sounding like a washing machine full of bolts.

Oh man, the "washing machine full of bolts" thing hit home hard. I had almost exactly the same wake up call a few years back, someone actually let out a laugh when they looked at my chain slap. Tightened it up and it was like a whole new bike, so quiet.
