Got laid off from a tech startup in Austin and found out my real skill was totally different.
I spent 8 months chasing a software engineer role at a company called Driftwood Analytics, then they cut 20% of staff last June. I was so down about it until I started helping a buddy organize his warehouse inventory for free. Turns out I'm WAY better at logistics and supply chain than I ever was at coding. Has anyone else stumbled into a whole different career after a layoff like that?

Wait, so you traded debugging code for debugging supply chains? That's actually kind of awesome, lol. I feel like half the battle is just figuring out what you're actually good at instead of what you think you should be doing.

And honestly, that "figuring out what you're good at" part takes way longer than people expect. I spent like 3 years trying to force myself into career paths I thought looked impressive on paper before I realized I'm way better at quick visual problem solving than sitting in meetings. Once you stop trying to be what you think you should be, things click a lot faster.
