My manager killed my side project and I'm actually relieved

I spent 4 months building an internal tool at my old job in Phoenix that automated our weekly reports. My manager found out I was using company time for it and put a stop to it in a meeting with HR. At first I was furious, but then I realized I was using that project to avoid the real work that gets promotions. Has anyone else had a project shut down that turned out to be a blessing in disguise?
