Turned down a $9k raise to stay at a job I liked, and 8 months later I got laid off anyway
Back in March I got an offer from a company in Austin for $9k more than I was making, but my current team let me work from home 3 days a week and I liked my boss. I said no and stayed put, mostly because the new place wanted 5 days in office. Eight months later my whole department got cut in a reorg, and the job in Austin was already filled. Tbh the lesson for me was that comfort at a job is not the same as safety, and I should have at least used the offer to get something in writing. Has anyone else picked the safer seeming option and had it blow up on them?
Ugh, I feel this in my BONES. My superpower is staying at jobs way too long because the break room has a good snack situation and the parking is free. I once passed on a place that paid more because my old office had a window with a nice tree outside, and then that tree got cut down and so did my whole team a year later. Comfort really does trick your brain into calling it safety, which is a total lie. You're right that getting the offer in writing as a counter would've been the smart move, at least then you'd have had something to lean on. Sorry it went down like that, that's a rough way to learn the lesson.
