I finally found a trick for tight stair risers that ACTUALLY works
Been fighting with stair installs for 6 years now, especially on those older houses where the risers aren't even close to square. Tried the usual methods, cutting extra, shimming, all that, but still kept getting gaps. Last week on a job in a 1920s bungalow, I decided to try something different. I took the carpet and wrapped it around a thin piece of scrap tack strip before tucking it down into the riser. That little bit of tension from the tack strip pushed the carpet tight into the corner and I had ZERO gaps for the first time ever. Has anyone else tried wrapping the carpet around something before tucking, or do you have your own weird fix for uneven stairs?

Barely kept my own fingers out of the way doing that trick.
