Rant: My neighbor in Omaha said carpet was just for looks

I was grabbing coffee yesterday and overheard a guy at the next table tell his friend, 'Carpet is just decoration, you could install it yourself in an afternoon.' He was talking about redoing his whole basement. It made me think about how many people don't get the prep work, like proper tack strips and stretching. I spent 6 hours last week just getting a subfloor level before a single yard went down. Does anyone else get tired of explaining this stuff to customers?

Honestly, that reminds me of my brother-in-law trying to lay vinyl plank in his kitchen. He said it was just "big stickers" and didn't bother with the underlayment or expansion gaps. Tbh, his floor buckled in three months and he had to pay someone to redo the whole mess. Some people just see the surface stuff and have no clue about what goes underneath.
