The seam roller trick I almost ignored saved me 2 hours on a shag carpet install last Friday

Was fighting with a high pile shag that kept showing every seam when a guy from an old crew told me to flip my roller on its side and use the edge instead, but has anyone else found that this actually flattens the fibers too much if you push down heavy?

The part about "flipping my roller on its side" got my attention because I always thought you had to use the roller flat to get a good seam. But I tried it on a shag last month and it worked way better than I expected. You're right to be careful about pushing too hard though, I found that a light touch with the edge blends the seam without crushing the fibers down. If you lean into it heavy it leaves a flat line that sticks out like a sore thumb. It's a good trick if you go easy with it.

Wait wait wait, you tried this on a shag and it worked? I thought for sure it'd grab the long fibers and make a total mess. I've been doing carpet for 8 years and I always flat roll shag seams because I was scared of getting a wave or pulling the yarn. So you just barely let the edge of the roller kiss the seam, like barely any pressure? I gotta try this on the next shag job I get, I've got a big family room coming up next week that's all plush shag and I've been dreading the seam work.
