I spent 2 years making chili wrong until my kid pointed it out
I always threw kidney beans straight from the can into my chili. One night my 8 year old asked why the beans were so mushy and falling apart. Turns out you're supposed to rinse them first and add them at the very end. Now my chili actually holds together and tastes way better. That one change turned a $4 meal into something I'm not embarrassed to serve guests. Anyone else have a cooking habit they just accepted until someone called them out on it?

Honestly this reminds me of how I used to make spaghetti for years. I would just dump the jar of sauce straight into the pot with the noodles and call it good. One time my buddy came over and watched me do it and he was like "dude you gotta simmer the sauce with some garlic and onions first." I thought he was just being fancy but I tried it and holy cow it changed everything. Now I can't even go back to plain jar sauce. It's wild how one little tweak can turn a lazy meal into something that actually tastes like you put effort in. Makes you wonder what other basic stuff we're all doing wrong.

Y'all ever do that thing where you boil hot dogs and think that's perfectly fine, then one day someone throws them on a grill and you realize you've been living a lie? That was me with spaghetti sauce too. I was the same way, straight from the jar, no shame. Then I started adding a pinch of sugar and some dried basil and I felt like a Michelin star chef or something. Now I throw in some mushrooms if I'm feeling wild and my family acts like I slaved over it for hours. It's funny how the smallest change makes you feel like you unlocked some secret level of cooking.
