My ancient rice cooker finally gave up the ghost last Tuesday during a lentil test
It just stopped heating mid-cook and I had to finish everything in a pot on the stove, so now I'm wondering if anyone else has found a decent rice cooker under 30 bucks that actually lasts more than a couple years?

Oh man that's a bummer! I've had good luck with the Aroma brand ones from Walmart, they're usually right around 25-30 bucks and mine has been going strong for almost 4 years now. You might have to check a few different stores because the prices bounce around a lot, but they're worth hunting down.

Have you checked thrift stores yet? I got a 20 dollar Aroma like @thomas_roberts mentioned and it's been running fine for 2 years now.
