TIL a lady in Boise offered me a glass of lemonade and told me her dad was a sweep

I was cleaning a flue on a really hot day last August, and the homeowner came out with a cold drink. She said her father did this job for 40 years and always told her to 'look for the cleanest brush, not the shiniest truck.' It was such a simple piece of advice, but it stuck with me. What's the best piece of wisdom someone outside the trade has given you about our work?

That's a solid way to judge a pro.

It cuts through all the marketing fluff and gets to actual results. You see how they handle real pressure and unexpected problems. That's the true test of skill.

So what's the test for an amateur then? I just freeze up when my printer jams... that's my real pressure. Guess I know where I stand.
