Debate: Is personal carbon offsetting actually helping or just making us feel better?

I was buying offsets for my flights for years, thinking I was doing my part. Then I read that some offset programs in Brazil double-counted credits and did little for local communities. So what do you all think are offsets worth it or just a way to ease our guilt while we keep flying?

Honestly, @the_jake I get the frustration but I read somewhere that some offsets actually fund real projects like tree planting or renewable energy. It's not perfect but it beats doing nothing at all, right? Least it gets people thinking about their footprint even if the math feels sketchy.
