Counting my feeders hit 50 birds in one hour last Saturday

I usually just glance out the window and see a few juncos and chickadees. But last Saturday I actually sat down with a cup of coffee and started counting. Hit 50 individual birds in about 60 minutes. That included 12 house finches, a pair of mourning doves, and a flicker I haven't seen in months. Made me wonder if I'm just not paying attention most days. Anyone else ever actually count how many visit in a set time?

I used to think minimalist spreads were better until I tracked 6 months of habit data and saw the difference a detailed weekly layout made for my consistency

My simple one page monthly was neat but I missed 60% of my daily habits over 3 months, then I switched to a full weekly spread with time blocks and suddenly hit 85% consistency - has anyone else found that more structure actually helped them stick with journaling long term?

A lead carpenter in Denver told me my cuts were 'sloppy' and it stung but he was right

Tbh I used to just eyeball my seam cuts and hope for the best. After he called me out on a job near Boulder, I started using a straightedge and a fresh blade every time. Made a huge difference in how clean my seams look. Anyone else get a reality check like that early on?

Back in 2018 at the farmer's market in Portland, this older fella running a taco cart showed me his trick of tucking the ends first and rolling tight so nothing falls out, and I still think about that little gesture every time I wrap up a batch for my own truck.

Shoutout to the cashier who told me my bread flour was overkill

I've been buying $8 bags of King Arthur bread flour for my banana bread for like two years now. Last week at the thrift store dollar bin section, an older cashier saw my cart and said just use all-purpose with a spoonful of vital wheat gluten for 30 cents less per loaf. Tried it with a $2 bag from the discount grocery on 5th Street and honestly my bread came out way softer. Has anyone else figured out cheaper substitutions that work just as good?

Small win: that old trowel trick actually worked on a tricky garage floor today

I was finishing a 20x30 garage slab outside Phoenix and the sun was cooking it faster than I could get a smooth surface. A guy I met at a supply house told me to keep a spray bottle with a mix of water and dish soap to lightly mist the concrete before my final pass. It bought me an extra couple minutes of working time and the finish came out way better than usual. Anyone else got a goofy trick like that for hot weather pours?

Debate: Do you still replace old control boards or repair them component by component?

I used to swap out entire control boards on washing machines without even thinking. It was faster and I didn't want to mess with soldering. But about two years ago, a customer in Denver showed me her 12-year-old board with just a burnt relay. I fixed it for $3 instead of charging her $200 for a new board. Now I repair about half the boards I see if the damage is small. It saves people money but takes way more time on site. Which side do you lean on for older machines?

I dropped $200 on a professional document scanner app and it actually saved my life last month

My home office was a disaster. Piles of old bills, tax papers, and receipts everywhere. Couldn't find anything. Saw an ad for this scanning app that promised to organize it all. Figured it was a scam, but I was desperate. Downloaded it, cost about two hundred bucks for the full version. You just take pictures of your papers with your phone. It reads the text, sorts them into folders by date and type, and even finds important info like due dates. Found an unpaid medical bill from two years ago that got lost in a pile. Paid it before it went to collections. Has anyone else used something like this? Looking for cheaper options for my mom now.

Your mileage may vary but I've seen plenty of cases where swapping the pair works just fine for years. If the voltage drop is small enough the keypad doesn't care if it's running on one data line.

You're talking about saving "a few bucks" but let's be real, that's hardly a flex. That old cable box, even when it's sucking power, is also probably giving you way better picture quality and reliability than a streaming stick that buffers every time someone breathes on the Wi-Fi. So you saved maybe 5 dollars a month, but you're also dealing with app crashes and compressed audio? Seems like a fair trade to me. Plus, most people don't even realize that unplugging stuff like that can mess with your DVR recordings or channel guide updates if you ever want cable again. You're basically saving pocket change and trading it for a worse experience. Is it really worth it?

Call tech support and tell them you're preheating to 350 for your GPU. See how fast they hang up on you. Honestly though, your house smelling like burnt thermal paste is the real cost here.
