Figuring out the right compost mix for my clay soil took me almost a full year
I kept adding green waste and it just turned to slime, but mixing in shredded cardboard and wood chips at a 2:1 ratio with the greens finally got it hot enough to break down. Anyone else in the Midwest have a good recipe for heavy soil?

Yeah, I feel that. My first pile was just kitchen scraps and grass clippings, and it was a cold, wet mess for months. I had to learn the hard way that you need way more browns, like dried leaves or that shredded cardboard you mentioned, to soak up the moisture and get it cooking.

Honestly that soggy first pile struggle is so real, we've all been there.
