Vent: I tried composting in my apartment for 6 months and ended up with a jar of fruit flies.

I learned you really need a proper seal (and maybe a different method) for indoor bins, so has anyone in a small space found a system that actually works without the bug invasion?

Switched to a lidded bucket with a carbon filter liner, totally stopped the flies. Troy_jenkins is right about burping jars too, that works if you keep up with it.

What kind of container were you using? A lot of those countertop bins have filters that don't really stop determined flies. In my place, I had to switch to a wide-mouth mason jar with one of those silicone-sealed lids you burp every few days.

Those silicone lids are a pain, I just use a regular compost bin and it works fine.
