Just realized I blew $45 on a 'revolutionary' coffee tamper that's basically a paperweight

I saw an ad for this fancy calibrated tamper that promised perfect pressure every time, so I ordered it online. It arrived and the base is so uneven my shots channel like crazy, making the coffee taste worse than before. Has anyone actually found a decent calibrated tamper, or are they all a gimmick?

Vent: A batch of cheap brake pads nearly cost me a customer

Last month, I installed a set of those no-name carbon pads from a bulk order on a regular's high end road bike. They squealed like crazy after the first rain ride, and he came back really upset, saying he almost crashed on a steep hill in Portland. I had to eat the cost for a full set of Shimano pads and an hour of labor to make it right. Has anyone else had a bad run with off brand pads that just don't hold up when they get wet?

Pro tip: A drop of nail polish remover saved a stuck front sight on a 1911

I was working on an old Colt 1911 from a customer in Tucson, and the front sight was frozen solid, wouldn't budge with a standard pusher. After three tries with penetrating oil and heat, I remembered an old trick and put a single drop of acetone-based nail polish remover on the dovetail base. Let it sit for ten minutes, and the sight tapped right out without any damage. Has anyone else found a good solvent trick for stubborn, old-school parts like that?

I always thought hiking in the rain was a bad idea until a trip in the Smokies

For years I avoided any trail if there was a 50% or higher rain chance, thinking it would be miserable and unsafe. Last spring, I got caught in a steady drizzle on the Alum Cave Trail to Mount LeConte because I misjudged the forecast. Instead of being awful, the fog made the views feel private and the forest smelled amazing. I was warm and dry in my gear, and the trail was nearly empty. It made me see I'd been missing out on a whole different hiking experience just to avoid a little water. Has anyone else changed their mind about hiking in less-than-perfect weather?
