Vent: my heat pump installer talked me out of the expensive add-on, glad I listened
After 4 months in my Denver place I was sure I needed the $2,000 smart thermostat package but he showed me the basic one in my unit already does scheduling and I just had to read the manual, has anyone else had a contractor actually save them money instead of upselling?

My buddy Dave had almost the exact same thing happen with his water heater a few years back. The first guy tried to sell him this fancy recirculating pump setup that was like eight hundred bucks, said it would save him tons on his water bill. Dave was about to go for it, but then his neighbor who does HVAC stuff stopped by and showed him that just insulating the pipes and turning down the temp a little did the same thing for like forty bucks in materials. He still gives that neighbor a Christmas card every year, honestly. It's wild how rare it is to meet a contractor who isn't just trying to pad their own pockets, so when you find one you gotta hold onto them.
