Got chewed out for not checking my collet runout before a big job

My lead said 'you're trusting a $0.02 part to hold a $500 tool' after a finish issue. Now I clock every holder first. Anyone have a favorite indicator for this?

Remember thinking runout checks were just busywork? I ran a long aluminum part once and got those weird chatter marks you can't fix. Spent two hours on finish passes for nothing. Now my Interapid tenths indicator lives by the spindle. I even caught a brand new holder that was out three thou.

Yeah, that's a lesson you only learn once. I keep a cheap test bar in my box just for that. Chuck it up, sweep the indicator, and you know in thirty seconds if a holder is junk. Found a shrink fit once that was out far enough to ruin a finish pass on stainless. Now it's just part of the setup, like wiping down the vise.
