Old timer at the shop swore by using a 1/2 inch drill bit for starting threads in aluminum

I laughed in his face until I stripped three holes in a row with the correct tap drill, ran back to his bench, and he handed me his worn-out bit that worked perfectly first try has anyone else had an old guy save them from their own stubborn pride?

Handed me a worn out screwdriver that fit the stripped slot like it was made for it.

That line about the screwdriver fitting like it was made for it hits me hard. It reminds me how often old, beat up tools actually work better than new ones because they've already been worn down to match real world use. Same thing with that pair of jeans you've had for years that fit just right in all the worn spots. Or the cast iron skillet your grandmother used that's been seasoned through decades of use. There's something about things that have been broken in that just can't be rushed or faked with new stuff. You ever notice how the things you've had the longest usually end up being the most reliable?
