Bought a refurbished tablet from a pawn shop in Portland 2 weeks ago and it still has the previous owner's accounts on it

I spent an hour trying to factory reset it last night before realizing the power button is sticky and doesn't register half the time, has anyone else dealt with pawn shop gadgets needing a deeper clean than just the screen?

Overheard a guy at Home Depot say you can save $50 a month just by switching to a heat pump water heater

I was grabbing some drywall anchors and this older guy was talking to the plumbing guy about his power bill. Said his went from $130 to $80 after swapping his old tank for a heat pump model. I've been looking at mine since it's from 2008 and probably costing me way more than I think. Has anyone here actually done the switch and seen real savings on their hydro bill?

Dealing with a bad car repair estimate took me 4 weeks too long

I brought my 2015 Honda into a shop near downtown for a weird grinding noise and they quoted me $1,100 for brake work I wasn't sure I needed. Spent three more weekends getting second opinions and watching YouTube videos before I realized the guy was trying to upsell me on calipers that were totally fine. Anyone else run into a mechanic who padded the estimate and how did you catch it?

That chat with a barber about razor blades made me rethink my whole kit

Talked to this old-school barber at a trade show last month who said he only uses one brand of blade for fades, nothing else. He told me 'your tools are only as good as how consistent you keep them' and it hit me that I swap between four different brands depending on what's on sale. Has anyone else found that one blade brand that just works better for their technique?

Talked to an old timer about brake pad drag and now I'm questioning everything

A retired mechanic named Dave was hanging around the supply house last week. He watched me grab a new set of pads for an OTIS and just said "You know 90% of those get swapped too early, right?" Told me he used to run them till the wear indicators were almost gone and never had a callback. I've always changed them the second they hit the mark. Now I don't know. Anyone ever push pads past the normal replacement point on purpose?

A client in Chicago said they only read the 3-star reviews now

We were talking about my agency's feedback page and they mentioned skipping the 5-star and 1-star extremes to find the real middle ground. It made me wonder if our perfect scores are actually less helpful than the average ones. Do you think most people look for balanced reviews over perfect ones?

Update: I was at the library in Springfield and noticed everyone was using the self-checkout.

The staff told me they only have one person at the main desk now because of it. Do you think this is better or worse for helping people find what they need?

Tried a different mix for my color frit and got a wild surprise

Honestly, I was just messing around in the studio last Tuesday. I had some leftover cobalt blue frit and a tiny bit of silver foil I usually use for luster. Ngl, I was bored and thought 'what if I just mix them together before I roll the gather?' So I sprinkled maybe a 4 to 1 ratio of blue frit with the silver bits right into my marver dish. When I rolled the hot glass in it and started shaping a simple tumbler, the silver didn't just make a shiny layer. It reacted and created these crazy, tiny webbed cracks all through the blue, like a lightning storm in the glass. It's not a flaw, it's a pattern. Totally stable after annealing. Has anyone else had a reactive surprise like this with mixing metals into frit? I wanna try it with copper now.

The condo fees in my building jumped $350 in one year - here's what happened

You should be mad at the previous owners who voted for low fees" - man, that hit home. My buddy bought into a building near downtown back in 2019, same situation, fees were like $400 a month and everyone thought they got a steal. Fast forward to last year, the roof started leaking into the parking garage, and they found out the reserve fund was basically empty because the old owners voted against a big assessment for like five years straight. Suddenly everyone's on the hook for $15,000 each. Even the board had no idea the fund was that bad because the old management company cooked the books. So yeah, I get being mad at the board, but sometimes the real culprits are the folks who sold out and moved away before the bills came due.
