Saw a 0.0005 inch difference on a mic and it blew my mind

I was checking some parts last Tuesday and noticed my bore mic was reading slightly off on a tolerance that called for plus or minus 0.002 inches. I got curious and looked up the calibration history on the shop's computer system. Turns out that mic was last certified 18 months ago, which is way past the 6 month cycle we're supposed to follow. I spent an hour going through old inspection reports and found that about 30% of the parts we ran in that time were measured with that same out of spec tool. My boss didn't believe me until I showed him the log. Has anyone else had a similar surprise from checking calibration records on your tools?

30% is a pretty big number to just stumble on like that.

Yeah @kimr33, I found 25% once and still can't believe I didn't mess up sooner!
