The time I laughed at my coworker for using a dial test indicator - turns out he was right
For maybe 5 years I set my tool heights by just touching off with a piece of paper and going by feel. Old method, worked fine for rough work. Then this new guy Dave came in and spent 3 minutes setting up a dial test indicator on every single tool change. I thought he was wasting time and told him so. But after watching his parts come out within 0.001 inch consistently while mine were all over the place, I started paying attention. He showed me how even a 0.002 difference in tool height throws off your finish pass on aluminum. I finally tried his method on a batch of 50 stainless parts last month and didnt have to scrap a single one. Anyone else have a technique they resisted for years that turned out to be better?

Aw man, 0.001 inch isn't that big of a deal for most jobs.

Tell that to my last haircut. I'd be thrilled with 0.001 inch.
