My buddy told me 'just look it up' when I got stuck in my coding class and it rubbed me the wrong way
I was at a bar in Denver with my friend who works in IT and I told him how I spent two hours stuck on a coding exercise in my intro class and he said 'just look it up, that's what real devs do.' That answer bugged me for days because I feel like looking things up all the time means I never really learn it, but then I started wondering if he is right and struggling is just wasted time. On one hand, sitting with a problem for hours teaches you how to read error messages and break stuff down, which feels like the actual skill. On the other hand, I watched a guy in my class copy answers off Stack Overflow for 3 weeks straight and he passed the quiz faster than me. So now I honestly can't tell if grinding through it builds something real or if I am just being stubborn while everyone else moves ahead. Where do you all land on this, do you look it up after 10 minutes or do you force yourself to sit there until it clicks?
So when the guy in your class copied stuff for 3 weeks and passed the quiz faster, did he actually understand it or just get lucky on that one test? That feels like the real question here. Because if he bombed the next one, your friend's advice might be trash.
