Oh man, that is the best advice ever! I tried to make a whole video game as my first thing in C++, which was a total disaster (I got stuck on just getting a shape to move). Breaking it down into tiny, boring steps like a calculator feels silly, but it's the only way to actually learn without wanting to throw your computer out the window. Your neighbor is a genius for saying that.
