The Tuesday my $12 thrift store drip machine beat my $200 setup and I almost quit coffee

My grinder broke last Tuesday morning, so I dug out a cheap drip machine I got at a Goodwill in Tucson for $12 three years ago. I used pre-ground stuff from the back of my cabinet, oldest bag in there, probably 4 months past the date. It was the best cup I had all week, and I had been making pour overs with a scale and gooseneck every morning like clockwork. I sat there kind of annoyed, because I have spent over $300 on gear this year alone. My wife asked why I looked mad while drinking coffee and I did not have a good answer. Has anyone else had their cheap backup gear totally show up their main setup?
