Warning: My buddy's coffee grinder advice nearly ruined my morning routine

Last month, my friend Dave told me I was wasting money on expensive beans because my grinder was trash. He said I needed to spend at least $200 on a burr grinder or just use pre-ground. So I went out and bought a $30 blade grinder from Target instead, thinking he was being a snob. Three days in, my coffee was all over the place. Some cups were bitter, some were weak, and I had chunks of beans floating in my mug. I finally grabbed a refurbished Baratza Encore for $99 and the difference was instant. Now I'm pissed I listened to him at all. Anyone else get bad advice from a friend who acts like they know everything about coffee?

My husband tried the same thing last year with a $25 blade grinder. I ended up pouring half the bag down the sink because the coffee was THAT bad. Got a used Capresso Infinity for $60 on Facebook Marketplace and it changed everything. Your friend Dave might be a snob but he's not WRONG about the grinder matter. Those blade grinders are pure garbage for anything besides spices.

Yeah I gotta be honest, I used to be exactly like that. Thought burr grinders were just for fancy people who wanted to feel superior. My buddy kept telling me the same thing and I was like nah, my $25 blade grinder works fine. Then I got a burr grinder as a gift and holy crap. First cup was just... better. More consistent, no random bitter notes, and I stopped getting that powdery dust mixed with big chunks. Now I have to admit that friend was right even though it hurts to say it.
