My coworker's simple question made me rethink comic fan gatekeeping

I used to look down on casual fans. Her honest questions about where heroes come from reminded me of my own start.

A buddy of mine used to act like a comic book cop, quizzing people on minor details. His younger cousin got into the movies and asked who the fastest hero really was. My friend started his usual rant, then paused when he saw how excited she was. He realized being a gatekeeper just made him look petty, not knowledgeable. These days he points her toward good beginner comics instead. It's a better look for everyone.

Ever see someone get too intense about canon details? My buddy used to correct every little Star Wars error until he saw it just annoyed people. Now he just points out fun easter eggs, way better vibe.

Comic book cop" is a wild way to describe someone, honestly.
