The time I laughed at a friend for collecting variant covers

I used to think variant covers were a total cash grab, but then I saw the Mike Del Mundo art on the Immortal Hulk #1 variant in person at a con last year. The colors and detail blew me away, and now I have 12 hanging on my wall. Anyone else get won over by a specific artist's cover work?

Wait, do you really think spending money on different pictures of the same comic is a good thing? I get that the Del Mundo art is nice, but I still see variant covers as a way to get people to pay more for the same story. I have a buddy who dropped fifty bucks on a virgin variant of a book he already owned. It just feels like the publishers are taking advantage of collectors who can't say no to a pretty picture. The art is cool, sure, but the actual comic inside is exactly the same as the one on the shelf for three bucks.
