The way fans rank comic artists by fight scenes drives me nuts
I keep seeing people put artists like Jim Lee on a pedestal just because they draw huge splash pages, but nobody talks about how they handle quiet dialogue scenes. Last month at a shop in Phoenix, a guy argued that a book with good action but stiff faces was better drawn than one with real emotion. Am I the only one who thinks storytelling beats spectacle when it comes to art?

Man, I totally get where you're coming from. I used to collect a run of Batman where the artist could draw a killer fight on a rooftop, but every time Bruce talked to Alfred his face looked like a wooden board, and it just killed the whole story for me. What finally clicked was reading a smaller indie book with simple art but the characters felt alive in every panel, and that made me realize the best art is the stuff that sells the moment, not just the explosion.
