Had a greenhorn on a rig in the Gulf last month who said he'd never check his own seals because 'that's what the tender is for'.

That's a dangerous way to think on a rig. Your own safety gear is your own responsibility first and last. The tender can't be everywhere at once.

Used to think that way too, until I saw a guy slip because his own line was frayed. Now I check everything myself, every time.
