Client swore a cheap power supply was fine - now I'm replacing his whole build
A guy on Facebook Marketplace told me last month that his "high end gaming PC" just needed a new GPU. I got it home and the PSU was some no-name 450 watt unit from 2015. He said it ran fine for years and I was being paranoid. Within 3 days that power supply took out the motherboard and both RAM sticks. Cost him $280 in replacement parts and I had to explain why skimping on a $60 PSU was a bad idea. Has anyone else dealt with a fried system from a junk power supply?

Honestly, I had a buddy who swore his cheap PSU was fine until it started making this weird buzzing noise. I told him to swap it out but he waited too long and it took his old i5 board with it. Ngl, that $50 mistake ended up costing him like $200 in used parts to fix.

That buzzing is basically the PSU screaming for help... I had a similar thing happen with an old build I was using for a file server. The fan started rattling and then the whole thing just gave out one night. Took out the sata controller on my motherboard, lost a whole drive of photos I hadn't backed up yet. People don't realize a cheap PSU can kill more than just the board, it can fry your storage too. $50 saved ends up being way more when you factor in data recovery or losing irreplaceable stuff.
