Found a weird fix for a laptop that wouldn't boot past the BIOS splash
Had a Dell XPS 13 that would freeze on the logo screen every time. I tried the usual CMOS reset and RAM reseat with no luck. On a hunch, I disconnected the internal battery for a full minute, not just a quick pop, and held the power button down the whole time. Plugged it back in and it booted right into Windows. Has anyone else had a stubborn laptop that needed a super long power drain like that?

My old laptop needed a similar exorcism to finally wake up.

That "similar exorcism" line is perfect. Reminds me of my buddy's ancient desktop. It would only boot if you tilted the case on a 45-degree angle and tapped the power button three times, like some weird tech voodoo ritual. He had a whole routine, @black.laura, involving a specific USB drive left in port two. It finally gave up the ghost when the tapping stopped working for good.
