Had a week where 4 machines in a row came in with the same dead CMOS battery
Last week was one of the strangest stretches I have had in a while. Monday started with a desktop that would not keep time, and a fresh CR2032 fixed it in five minutes. Tuesday, a laptop with the same clock problem. Wednesday and Thursday, two more, all with the exact same symptom. Four machines in four days, all from the same office park off Highway 7. By the second one I was joking with the front desk guy that somebody over there must be storing these things in a freezer. Turned out the building had a power bump over the weekend and something in their setup was draining the coin cells fast. I swapped the batteries, checked the power supply ripple on the desktops, and sent them back with a note about maybe getting a decent surge strip. Best part was the whole run took maybe 90 minutes total and the client paid the standard diagnostic fee each time. Sometimes the easy ones just land in your lap. Anyone else ever get a run of identical repairs like that in one week?
That line about storing them in a freezer got me, we had a run of three dead laptop fans in one week once and it was just one guy who let his cat nap on the vents. Guess weird weeks just clump like that.
