I keep seeing people swear by static wrist straps on this forum

Been doing board swaps for 7 years without one. Touch the metal case before you touch anything and you're fine. Spent $30 on a grounding mat once and it sits in the closet.

Read some electrical engineering forum where a guy tested it with a multimeter and said the strap did basically nothing if you weren't plugged into a proper ground.

The real problem nobody talks about is the contact between the strap and your skin. People slap those things on over dry skin or through a shirt and think it's working. Your skin has natural resistance, and if the metal isn't making direct contact with enough surface area, you're basically wearing a bracelet that does nothing. I saw a video where a guy tested himself with an oscilloscope and the strap only cut noise when he moistened the contact point first. Even the best ground in the world can't fix a bad connection at the wrist.
