My coworker insisted we replace the thermal paste on a 5 year old gaming PC. It dropped temps by 15 degrees.

Did the same thing last year, it's a total game changer for old hardware.

What about the security side of running old hardware on new software? @jana584, I've found that older machines often miss out on critical security updates after a certain point. You get the new features, but you might be opening a door for malware if the hardware can't support the latest protections. It feels like a trade-off between speed and safety that doesn't get talked about enough. Sometimes keeping the old, slow, but fully patched OS is the safer play for a machine that still goes online.

Yeah the security thing is real. I saw a tech article that said some new software just can't patch old hardware flaws, like the chips themselves. So you might get a faster browser but the base system could have holes. It's not always worth the risk if you do banking or anything on that old laptop.
