Why does nobody talk about thermal paste pumps?
I was swapping a CPU cooler in a Dell Optiplex at my bench last Thursday and the old paste had basically turned to concrete. Took me 20 minutes with a plastic scraper and some isopropyl to get it clean, nearly chipped the die. Has anyone else dealt with crusty paste that just won't budge?

Respectfully, gotta disagree on the hair dryer approach. Heat can actually bake that dried out paste deeper into the pores of the IHS if it's really old and crusty, making the cleanup worse. In my experience, the slow and steady method with a good quality plastic scraper and lots of isopropyl works better, even if it takes a few extra minutes. Just gotta be patient and let the alcohol do the soaking work. Your mileage may vary, but I'd rather spend a little more time than risk a cracked die from heat stress.

Man I feel your pain, that Optiplex paste is brutal. What finally worked for me was hitting it with a hair dryer for like 30 seconds first to soften it up, then using a plastic scraper at a really flat angle. Took a few passes but saved my fingers from cramping.
