A brutal summer pour changed how I plan my finishes

So last week, I was helping my neighbor with his driveway pour. It was one of those scorching summer days, you know? We got started at dawn, but by mid-morning, the sun was blazing. The concrete started to stiffen up way faster than I'm used to. I was trying to smooth it out, but it felt like fighting against time. We ended up with some uneven spots and a few cracks later. I talked to a pro finisher at the supply house, and he said on hot days, you gotta keep the surface damp or use a retardant. Now I always have a spray bottle handy and check the forecast before scheduling a pour. It seems obvious now, but it was a real eye-opener for me.

Yeah, the heat is a teacher that gives pop quizzes on your driveway. @corag61 isn't wrong, and that spray bottle fix feels stupidly simple after you learn it the hard way. Nothing like a cracked slab to make the lesson stick.

Come on, it's just a driveway crack. People act like it's a house falling down. A little line in the concrete isn't the end of the world... it's just an eyesore. I've had one for years and it hasn't gotten worse or caused any real problems. Feels like we're making a big deal over something that's mostly just ugly.
