Hot take: The old prison at Alcatraz has some weird HVAC vents that don't add up

I went on the night tour last Tuesday and kept staring at these huge metal vents running along the cell house ceilings. The ranger said they were for air circulation but there's no way that system could actually work with the fog rolling in every night. I counted at least 8 vents that lead to dead ends in the walls. Anyone else notice this stuff on the tour or am I just seeing things?

Those dead end vents are strange alright, probably some abandoned retrofit.

Weren’t those vents original to the building, not a retrofit?
