A client's one comment fixed my balayage highlights forever
Honestly, I had a client sit in my chair about 6 months ago and after I finished her balayage she said 'it's pretty but looks like all the other ones on Instagram.' That stung but she was right. I was doing the same chunky sections on everyone. So I changed my technique to use thinner, more random sections and different toners for each layer. Now I let the hair fall naturally and pick up pieces without a pattern. Has anyone else gotten feedback that completely shifted how they do a service?

Joked around with a guy at the shop about this once. He was doing the same blonde foil pattern on every client and I teased him about it at lunch one day. He got mad at first but then actually tried mixing up his sections the next week. Said it totally changed his game and his clients started noticing the difference. Funny how a little push from someone can flip your whole approach.

Honestly used to think getting called out like that meant the client was just being picky or rude. But reading this I totally get it now because seeing the same pattern over and over is boring for everyone involved. Your client just wanted something that felt special and not copied from a Pinterest board. That shift to random thin sections and different toners makes so much sense, it probably gives way more depth and a natural lived in look. Definitely taking this advice to heart next time I sit for highlights.
