I finally quit booming up blind on the Grove and started using the load chart app, cut my setup time by 20 min
For 7 years I did every pick on a 60 ton Grove by eyeballing the boom angle and guessing my radius from the last job. Last month a guy named Travis at a yard in Fort Worth showed me the free load chart app on his phone and I timed it. My setup went from 45 minutes of second guessing to under 25, and I stopped overshooting my radius on a steel pick at 32 feet. Anyone else got a phone trick that beats paper charts, or do you still keep the book in the cab?
Read a thread on a crane forum last spring where a guy ran both for a month and logged the numbers. He said the app was faster on paper but the book saved him twice when his phone died in the cold, so he keeps both now. I stopped trusting the paper radius every time anyway. Some of those old charts were printed before my dad was running iron.
